I’ve been doing the Substack alts research, too. Yeah, a lot of alts are really expensive! Some are free up to 1K subs. Beehiiv is free for 2.5K subs, as is EmailOctopus.
My plan is to setup a Wordpress site with The Newsletter Plugin - both are free with optional paid upgrades. I’ll be paying $7 a month or so for the service that actually sends the emails called MailerSend, which is free up to 3K individual emails per month, then $1 per 1K emails.
