Hello beautiful people! It’s obviously the end of the year here and we’re all tired and cranky and want to rest so I’ll keep this short.
December Chazzerei
One big thing: I’ll be ON STAGE at the Bell House 2/1/23 for the Gender Reveal live show! Tickets are here.
Also for you, my cherished newsletter readers: it is time to gift to YOU, my most treasured playlist. I am a longtime Christmas hater (I’m Jewish, it’s illegal to me mad at me about this) but especially the music. I’m not saying you can’t like it. But boy, do I not like it!
However, I have assembled a weapon in the war on Christmas that will make any holiday gathering bearable for you and yours.
Presenting: The Only Good Christmas Songs
Julian Cassablancas’ cover of I Wish It Were Christmas Today. I know it is from SNL, and this guy is basically the most annoying man on Earth, but everyone got a chip implanted in their brains in the year 2002 that makes the Strokes good to you forevermore.
Father Christmas, The Kinks. A song about robbing and beating the shit out of Santa. Tremendous! Get his ass.
Merry Christmas (I Don’t Want to Fight Tonight), The Ramones. The Ramones are Jewish-coded (Queens residents). Don’t email me about this.
Santa Claus is Comin’ To Town, Bruce Springsteen. A good (live!) cover of a bad song by my dad and yours. Good syncopation by the big guy Bruce on this one.
Another Lonely Christmas, Prince. It’s Prince! You know, from music.
Ain’t No Chimneys in the Projects, Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings. Also, really, any songs on Holiday Soul Party. I’m not a monster. I have a heart.
Christmas in Hollis, Run-DMC. The world’s borough remains undefeated.
That’s it. That’s the list.
Comics this month
Over on my Patreon (where you can see these puppies as they come out, earlier than anyone else! For the low low low low low price of $2/month):
And over on The Nib:
Other stuff:
A few months ago, the folks at Five Dials asked me to do “The Everything List,” a little writeup of everything I’ve been taking in with my eyes and ears. It’s a fun little essay you can read for free!
Here’s the list:
Like I said, a slow month for your friend Mattie! If you’re a movie liker, did you know I have a Letterboxd?.
