Quiet month! Just been plugging away in the book mines. here’s me, in many ways:
Chazzerei
Big doings right now is that it is CONVENTION SEASON. Here’s where to catch me:
Next weekend, 9/9 & 9/10 is the SMALL PRESS EXPO in Bethesda, MD. I’ll be there! Table E11A!
9/16: The Picto Beach Bazaar, Rockaway Beach NYC
9/17: Trans Art Market, Astoria NYC
9/22: TBA Philadelphia Boys Weekend event. Stay tuned! I’ll try to announce details on various social media.
9/30 & 10/1: MICE, Boston MA. I’m a special guest and drew the poster for this one. Check it out:
To be frank it's absolutely WILD to me to be drawing this poster and to be a special guest at this convention being held at the university I attended for engineering school. Life is unpredictable!!!!! Anyway there are some more book events this year it’s looking like! If you live in The American South, keep an eye out.
Mattie’s Career Redefinition Corner
This week’s “Corner” Corner is about The Nib, which shuts down daily publishing tomorrow after ten years, nine of which I have been there for.
Anyway, I’ve written about it here already, and Bors wrote some beautiful things yesterday. But it’s one thing to plan for it, and another to experience it. And I’m experiencing a profound feeling of being unmoored, if I’m being honest. And that’s okay, things change. Ten years is a wonderful run and I’ll always be grateful for what the publication and my colleagues did for me. And a lot of it was a true highlight for me creatively and I’ll never ever forget it. But people keep asking me what’s next? And I can’t truly say for sure. I’m going to keep making comics (like say, on my Patreon), and hopefully keep making books. It’s a little less stable out there, but I’m not going anywhere.
Comics this month
Over on my Patreon (where you can see these puppies as they come out, earlier than anyone else! For the low low low low low price of $2/month):
And over on The Nib, I went out with three wasteland comics:
Odds and Ends
I was on Trashfuture with my pals to talk about my mortal enemy Eric Adams.
Was on Slate’s The Waves podcast with my pal Scaachi to talk about my mortal enemy, all celebrities and also “chess.”
A nice review of Boys Weekend in the Washington Post!
