Hey beautiful people. My beautiful people. April has been normal! Mostly I am plugging away on a new graphic novel. Here’s a fun little guy from it. Hello!
I actually finished the first draft of the script this week and got some encouraging notes. Excited for this one, really! It’s the most complicated, weird work I’ve ever attempted, which is a little terrifying. Not like this friendly gentleman! No.
Chazzerei
This was a pretty calm month on the Me front to be honest! A lot of running around. Writing this to you from New Orleans, maybe my favorite place in America that’s not NYC. I haven’t stopped eating big sandwiches since I got here. What a town. Do you like to eat food? Sound off in the comments.
GOING JAY SHERMAN MODE BRIEFLY
Sorry to be all buy my book over here but! My book is out in like, a month! That’s so soon! I’m quite proud of it and can’t wait for it to be out there.
MATTIE’S MOVIE CORNER
As this newsletter is still ~taking shape~ really, I’m thinking down here we can try what i’m calling Mattie’s Corner Corner. For instance, last month? It was recipe corner. This month? It’s movie corner, baby!
I’m here to hit you with a hot rec: Felix van Groeningen and Charlotte Vandermeersch’s The Eight Mountains. It’s really stuck with me since we watched it a few weeks ago. It’s about friendship, and nature, and family, and death, and also cheese briefly. I hate to be all like “oh it’s a meditation on human relationships” but it fuckin’ is and it’s beautifully shot and acted. It makes me want to go to northern Italy and have emotional and financial problems, leaning only on the one other person that has ever really understood me, fundamentally.
It’s Brokeback Mountain but for two dudes who are friends (this is a compliment!). Track it down if you can.
Comics this month
Over on my Patreon (where you can see these puppies as they come out, earlier than anyone else! For the low low low low low price of $2/month):
And over on The Nib:
Odds and Ends
I hopped on Trashfuture to talk about my best friend Eric Adams and also an exciting new business opportunity: Vertical necropolises.
Wrote something unhinged with my good friend Danny Lavery: It's 1178 BCE and the Bronze Age Has Never Looked Stronger. No, I Won't Lift My Eyes to the Horizon Right Now
ok personally i LOVE to eat food
i like to eat food sometimes, but i wish it was optional, like nail polish.
